Frankfurt Marathon 2026: Complete Guide β Course, Strategy, and Why It's a PB Machine
The Mainova Frankfurt Marathon takes place on Sunday, October 25, 2026. If you're looking for a flat, fast, well-organized marathon to chase a personal best, Frankfurt should be at the top of your list. Here's everything you need to know.
Why Frankfurt?
Frankfurt is one of Europe's fastest marathon courses. The virtually flat loop course, cool late-October temperatures (typically 8-14C), and strong pacing groups create ideal PB conditions. The race has produced some of the fastest marathon times on German soil, and it's significantly easier to enter than Berlin.
The Course
The course starts and finishes at the Festhalle (exhibition hall), running through Frankfurt's city center, along the Main river, past the famous skyline of the banking district, and through the historic Romerberg square. Total elevation gain is minimal β under 100 meters across the entire 42.195km. Key landmarks:
- Km 1-10: City center through Sachsenhausen, along the south bank of the Main
- Km 10-21: Across Friedensbrucke, through the Ostpark, flat riverside paths
- Km 21-30: Northern loop through Bornheim and Nordend neighborhoods
- Km 30-35: Return along the Main β this is where the race is won or lost
- Km 35-42: Back through the banking district, finish inside the Festhalle
Race Strategy for Frankfurt
The flat profile invites even pacing, but the most successful runners use a conservative negative split:
- Km 1-10: +10-15 seconds above target pace. Resist the fast start β the crowd energy is electric but dangerous
- Km 10-21: Settle into target pace. The riverside section is sheltered and flat
- Km 21-30: Hold steady. Take gels at km 22 and km 30
- Km 30-35: This is where PBs are made. If you paced correctly, you'll feel strong
- Km 35-42: Push. The finish inside the Festhalle is unforgettable
